Twitter making inroads amongst US politicians

Gov Arnie

Came across yet another Twitter related article on the web, this time on CNN,

A plane carrying California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made an emergency landing Friday evening after the cockpit filled with smoke, his office said in a statement.

Schwarzenegger confirmed the incident with a tweet on the social-networking Web site, Twitter. He also included a photo of the jet on the tarmac…More

I guess Twitter is the most often utility written about these days on the net, you almost feel you rarely read about Google!

Mayawati on Twitter?

Mayawati

I think it is really cool to see these famous politicians connecting with people thru’ Twitter.

Indian politicians have at least started having their own websites/blogs and very few are getting onto twitter. Even if they are on twitter it is rarely updated.

Can you imagine what PM-aspirant Mayawati’s tweets would look like?

  • Unveiled my 5 foot statue
  • Unveiled yet another statue of mine. Do you have a problem? You better not.
  • Replaced Mahatma Gandhi’s statue with your beloved leader’s (that is ME!) statue.
  • I have sent 400 policemen to capture ONE dacoit. What an idea Sir ji (or Behen-ji)?

Hmm..let us leave things the way it is. I don’t want to see the Twitter landscape with these kinds of tweets. Jokes apart I encourage you to follow @Shashi Tharoor

Verified Account On Twitter

The interesting thing to see  was the “Verified Account“  sign on @Schwarzenegger. I am sure @SRK would have loved to see this on blogs during IPL-2 – the fake IPL player had given him enough grief (but then why would someone want to verify a ‘fake’ person?)

This useful ‘verified account’ feature on Twitter was launched on June 11, 2009. As of today I haven’t come across any Indian based ‘Verified Account’. I am sure we will see one soon.

Indian Twitters Have Lower #Followers

While we do read India is having a sizable Twitter userbase the ‘followers’ of Indian Twitters come no where close to US Twitters. For e.g. @Schwarzenegger has over 380k followers and our own @SRK has about 9k followers. But then India is different.

One of the reasons could be that very few are online ‘all the time’. I find Twitter useful because I am online most of the time and I get to see (or should I say ‘hear’) the tweets as they happen.
