In continuation with my MobileMonday 3G post, there was a lot of talk about 3G will tick well in rural India. Reasons being, there will be many in non-Tier-1 cities who will want to make use of telemedicine. I hope it does become a reality by which the needy really get what they want.

The TV fraternity in India sees a huge opportunity in regional languages. They agree it is the future. While explicitly the names of the languages haven’t been mentioned I am assuming the non-Hindi space in the language pie is mainly occupied by the four South Indian languages – Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil & Telugu. Other than these I think Marathi, Gujarati and Bengali are big.

CDAC has developed a technology which will allow you to type domainnames in 22 Indian languages. Currently Latin characters are used to write the domainnames in English and European languages. ICANN, the authority which approves all domainname related issues, has decided to allow domainnames in many non-English languages. ICANN expects to take these domainnames live by mid 2010.

Twitter has been gaining substantial user base from India. Just a year back this article said Twitter was yet to gain popularity in India. In March 2009 the traffic from India went up by 74%, but as the comments in that posting indicates when you start from zero the growth curve always looks impressive. The profile of Twitters from India is pretty interesting.

We are happy to announce the launch of a new feature, Transliteration Bookmarklets, that will let you use transliteration on a website that does not support it currently. Transliteration Bookmarklets is a browser-based application that lets you type in your language in any text box on any website and gets added to your browser much like a regular bookmark.

This indeed is wonderful news for the Indian language community on the internet. Google India is the only search engine major which has recognized the opportunity in the Indian language space. They are addressing the needs of the majority (non-English speaking) in India. The Indic group based in India has been churning very good tools for language publishers like Oneindia.in.

How true.

News channels take elections very seriously. Election coverage is to general news channels what budget coverage is to business channels—the definitive event that establishes the street-cred of a channel. The ratings on that day also determines the bragging rights to being the channel that is ‘most trusted’ when it matters the most.

The Indian 2009 general elections saw some amount of activity in the internet and mobile space. Recently I had written about Indian language display ads doing better than English ads, politicians taking the net seriously and e-LK Advani.

One of the things I often hear from the VC world about the Indian language space is – UGC is lacking, entering text in languages is difficult.

Regarding UGC all I would say is that Oneindia.in has seen a growth in language UGC (comments, article contribution, feedback emails).
