At times I feel websites are human – they catch some sort of infection (flu) which needs to be attended to immediately, else your reputation (revenues) takes a beating.

We at Oneindia.in take steps to keep our site free of any such infections but at times we have failed (possibly only once so far). There are three services one could use to keep an eye on the health of the site,

Most of us would agree a ‘brand’ has an influence on the liking of a product. Ask anyone ‘Which search engine works for you the best?”, the obvious answer you expect to hear is ‘Google of course’.

Language Bookmarklets: Google gives a big push to Indian languages, yet again!

According to the official Google India Blog,

We are happy to announce the launch of a new feature, Transliteration Bookmarklets, that will let you use transliteration on a website that does not support it currently. Transliteration Bookmarklets is a browser-based application that lets you type in your language in any text box on any website and gets added to your browser much like a regular bookmark.

This indeed is wonderful news for the Indian language community on the internet. Google India is the only search engine major which has recognized the opportunity in the Indian language space. They are addressing the needs of the majority (non-English speaking) in India. The Indic group based in India has been churning very good tools for language publishers like Oneindia.in.

‘Blame Google’ campaign in Print community hits Indian shores

Print community in the US has been blaming Google for their downfall. Now this fever has hit the Indian shores.

Aroon Purie, chairman and editor-in-chief at The India Today Group, recently said they would not invest anymore in the digital space. I think they do see the importance of the internet, it is just that they will not invest anything ‘more’ in the digital space,

Publishers like AP etc etc are asking for a revenue share from Google, bloggers and aggregators. But then Google,bloggers could also come back and ask the publisher to share revenue from the traffic generated by them (Google). There is no end to this sharing business.

Wikia Search Shut

According to Jimmy Wales blog, Wikia Search has shut on March 31, 2009. Wikia had raised funds from well known personalities and it was being promoted as ‘open source search’. It did not take off

For those who use Google Webmasters Tools you may find Greynium’s “GWT Analyzer” useful. For webmasters the reports from GWT have been very useful but if the data you need to analyze is a lot. you would need some extra help.

Last week we had some panic time at work. Trust me, it wasn’t fun. Few of our oneindia.in channels started being shown as “infected”. If you are a Firefox user you would be shown an warning which said the site was infected with Malware and the reasons too were shown.

Most webmasters use Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) to submit their URLs to Google. Yahoo has a similar product – Site Explorer and Microsoft too has one. GWT by far is the best and is far ahead of the so called competitors.
