Bangalore still the best city to get funding for a start-up

It is always interesting to read about start-ups & entrepreneurship, especially if it is related to India. An interesting research carried by Zinnov about start-ups in India was published in ET today.

  • In Silicon Valley (the original one, the US) around 10% of the start-ups have women as co-founders. In India it stands at 6%.
  • For the period 2009-12 number of start-ups with women co-founders: Bangalore (23), NCR (20), Mumbai (17), Hyderabad (12). Way too low a figure.
  • About 20% of the founders in Silicon Vally are freshers straight out of college. In India it stands at 7%.
  • Number of product start-ups by year (which have at least a beta version): 2001 (101), 2005 (162), 2009 (335), 2009 (458), 2012 (425*)
  • Number of product companies as of Nov 2012 in India: 3,402
  • Bangalore has the highest number of product companies but NCR (Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Chandigarh & Mohali) is catching up very fast.
  • Majority of product companies were/are web based, cloud is catching up mainly because it needs far less capital to start one.
  • Early stage funding in India: $44 million in 2005 has grown to a whopping $1.1 billion in 2011. Good.
  • Best cities to get funding for startup: Bangalore, NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai
  • Between 2009-12 55% of the founders had less than 10 years of experience. I should say when I started in 1999 I had just about 10 years of experience.
  • VC funding in India still low: US ($32.6 billion), China ($5.9 billion), Israel ($1.6 billion), India ($1.5 billion)

Bangalore would have done far better if our infrastructure was fine tuned with the growing economy. The roads, garbage disposal in Bangalore is dismissal.

The yearly Product Conclave held in Bangalore has become a major event for entrepreneurs across India.
