Apple released a new version of their OS for iPads, iOS 4.2.1, on November 22, 2010. I had heard from others iOS 4.2.1 was going to support few Indian languages.
We do see a reasonable amount of traffic coming from Apple devices (iPad, iPhone) to Oneindia. Many of our users were unhappy about not being able to read any of our Indian language sites on their Apple toys. We too were unhappy.
Yesterday I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 on my iPad.You are required to have iTunes 10.1 to upgrade the iPad OS. Good strategy. Every time I tried to upgrade to iTunes 10.1 on my Windows 7 laptop, the error I got was,
Service ‘iPod Service’ (Pod Service) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services
Based on the advice from Apple forums I did the following,
- Uninstalled iTunes, QuickTime and all Apple related entries from the PC
- Reinstalled the new version of iTunes
The iOS 4.2 upgrade is about 520 MB, the download aborted a few times. Got tired. Again went back to Apple forums, was advised to disable the anti-virus and firewall. I chose to disable just the firewall, it worked.
Once the OS upgrade file was downloaded I upgrade was reasonably straightforward.
The feature list of iOS 4.2 mentions “New languages, dictionaries and keyboards” but doesn’t give the list of languages iOS supports. Immediately after the upgrade I visited the language section of Oneindia mobi, was happy to note iPad users can happily read Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil & Telugu.
Finally, Apple has Indian flavours. Tastes good. Tastes Yummy! Will Android follow suit?
