Will India allow Employees to have a say in the Business Direction?

For those who are following tech news, they would have heard about employees of major companies such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft protesting the direction their employer was taking. A recent newsletter summarized these walkouts.

  • 20,000 Google employees participated in a walk-out, as well as an organized awareness campaign, to end forced arbitration policies.
  • Amazon employees wrote an open letter to Jeff Bezos, demanding Amazon “Stop selling facial recognition services to law enforcement,” along with demands for transparency around Amazon’s law enforcement contracts.
  • Microsoft employees published a petition that began: “We request that Microsoft cancel its contracts with ICE, and with other clients who directly enable ICE. As the people who build the technologies that Microsoft profits from, we refuse to be complicit.”

In India many may see such an activity as a threat, none want to see the formation of a Union. There were talks about IT companies need to have worker’s Union in India. In my opinion it is a bad idea because few bad elements could derail the entire company’s vision.

Coming back to the topic, would major companies (IT & non-IT) in India allow their employees to determine which clients the company should not work for? I doubt it.
