I visited www.nic.in after a very long time (may be a year). It looks much better now. NIC needs to set aside its love for its own name (nic.in) and “fix” the domainnames of all govt websites. For e.g. why should the URL of President of India still be http://presidentofindia.nic.in/ ? I think it should be http://president.gov.in/ The domainname’s TLD is dot-in, why do we have “ofindia” in the domainname?
Not sure if it is just me but I just cannot search their site easily. For e.g. I wasn’t able to find the official URL for Prime Minister’s office (PMO) 🙁 NIC is in talks with Yahoo and Google to power their search but I think it is more important to have the data in place. Data needs to be updated often. Only then search engines find that site juicy enough to visit/chew/digest again and again.
Thanks to ex-IT minister Dayanadi Maran, Internet was taken a lot more seriously by the government. But a lot more has to be done. NIC needs to make sure all state govt sites migrate to statename.gov.in domainnane. e.g. mysore.nic.in should be mysore.karnataka.gov.in (yes it is long but then it is “correct”).
