Mobile is big in India but …

Read VSS Mani, Justdial.com CEO’s interview about taking local search online. The part which caught my eyes was,

“It took him three months to get an SMS code in India. He got one in 30 minutes in the US, on the Internet. “

This is nothing but a demotivating scenario in India. Why is that we make life difficult for people/businesses in India to succeed?

I know of a mobile portal that has been sending about 1 crore SMSes a month (these are not spam but users have signed up). This portal was using a shortcode.

Needless to say, many big mobile operators saw the content of the SMSes to be competing with their own VAS, so they blocked all messages from this particular shortcode. Basically, these operators are telling “If I am sending cricket scores you cannot have a shortcode with me and send cricket scores”.
