Orkut has been #1 social networking site in India for many years, Google has been proud of it. Facebook has been ruling all over the world, finally they rule the social networking space in India.  Finally it is about product. Orkut has released the updated version, looked stagnant for a while though. Google is sure to counter this with their new social networking service, internally called Google Me.

Google launched Orkut in 2004 but has been more popular in Brazil & India more than US. Globally the user base of Orkut is at 55 million, while Facebook has 571 million users (as of July 2010)

You see a fair amount of activity in Indian language on Facebook these days. I have seen members updating their Walls purely in Hindi. These are early days for language on social networking but Facebook has been quick in supporting Indian languages.
