Mobile, Broadband report card for 2011 in India

December 25, 2011 by BG Mahesh Leave a Comment

Lot of things happened in India in the telecom sector – 2G scam, MNP (Mobile Number Portability), rise in smart phone usage, profits of telecom companies shrinking. For details see “Spectrum of troubles in 2011 for telecom industry“. The main table from the article has been captured here.

ParticularsDec 2010Nov 2011
Telephone Subscriber Base (million)787921
Mobile Subscriber Base (million)752889
Average Revenue Per User (GSM-mobile)Rs 105Rs 95
Minutes of usage per user per month (mobile)360340
Net addition of mobile users per month (million)238
Broadband user base (million)1114.5
Fixed line users (million)3533
Overall tele-density (%)6678
Rural tele-density (%)3137

Broadband has to be far bigger, I find the growth slow. But I do hear a lot about mobile internet and we at Oneindia are seeing a lot more traction for our mobile effort. Will 2012 see a huge wave of mobile internet users in India? Wouldn’t mind it.
