India mobile stats: Ranks 7th for multiple SIM, 2nd for prepaid

According to a report from Nielsen, prepaid mobiles are popular in emerging markets. India ranks 2nd only after Russia.

Prepaid users are not known for being loyal to their mobile operators, they just terminate the connection if they find a better plan from another operator. But getting a connection in India is not as easy as before – one has to give all the necessary documents.

You see these days people carrying multiple mobile handsets in India. Few of a genuine reason but I believe many carry it for the sake of ‘social status’.

Anyways, now we do have few handsets, including local handset makers in India, who make multi-SIM handsets. For multi-SIM handsets, it is early days in India, this is clearly seen in the graph below.

Update: Over the years dual SIM phones have become default in India. iPhone finally released a dual SIM phone in 2018.
