Opensource database MySQL valued between US$600 million and $1 billion :-)

MySQL is by far the most popular opensource database used by techies. It has proved its robustness over the years. It may not have all the features of Oracle but most of us don’t need all the features commercial databases have to offer. How many of us use the advanced features in our mobile handsets? I bet very few. Infact few of the new models from Nokia have “fewer” features when compared to its predecessors.

Are immigrants helping the US economy?

Not sure if it is all a coincidence but I have been dealing with all immigration issues today! I started my day writing to Rajiv [of immigration.com] about his portal. Then I see an email about one of our contributors returning to India. A very well written piece explaining why they are returning to Bangalore. All I can say is “lucky grandparents” for having such a lovely grandchild. This cute girl is sure to be pampered by her grandparents.

Will Facebook win over Orkut in India?

Talk to any school/college going kid and you do hear the “orkut” sound byte often in their conversations. Kids are very internet savvy in India today, but mostly in Tier-I cities. I am waiting to see that kind of growth in Tier-II cities. I heard about Orkut from my teenager kid. Her entire class (may be even school) seems to be on Orkut. So far it has been “clean fun” for them. The definition of “clean fun” varies depending on whom you ask – the parent or the kid. I guess you can call it generation gap.
